Deer Rule & Military's Out of Schools

Readers of Helena's Independent Record have just been informed via poll surveys that in Helena deer rule and the military should be out of the high schools. The recent surveys are disclaimed as being unscientific sampling and merely a reflection of how most readers answered the survey question.
I did not see the survey, respond to the survey or know anyone who did. I believe my conclusions might be reflective of many other non-responding Helenans and not in agreement with
the published results.
First of all the estimates of the Helena deer population seem to vary but for the sake of making my point I will use the 300 or 400 number recently suggested. I know for sure of about 20 which have been born in my back yard over the past ten years. If there was a pack of hundreds of wild dogs which ran throughout the city endangering domesticated animals, humans, cars, landscaping and spreading disease, how quickly would they be rounded up and euthanized? Don't know? Well, let Spot out for a run and see how long before the city pound is pounding on your door? I don't believe in more government control in our lives, but hey, it's almost hunting season. There is obviously no one hungry in Helena, except maybe a few vegetarians.
Which brings me to why anyone would for even a micro-second think that the military should not be allowed to recruit in our public schools! It is because of the military that we are able to have public schools, freedoms and the greatest country on God's green earth. Who were the heroes in Katrina? The daring rescuers of the Coast Guard, the Navy, the National Guard, and all the other fine branches of the military service. Today's army is all-volunteer, How wonderful to know there are young men and women who value their American heritage and want to serve and protect our way of life. If our high schools aren't fertile ground for the most noble career of all, then what is being taught there that our young people aren't clamoring for the recruiters to come and present their bold opportunities?
When I see poll results like the recent ones which sanctify deer and disparage military, I am compelled to put my thoughts to paper, because I know I am not alone in concluding a deer's place is in the woods and the military's place is in our schools. Allowing deer to rule is endangering our children and our pets, not to mention property damage and destruction. Not honoring the importance and opportunity of the military is absurd as they stand for us in the gap between our safety and our destruction from terrorism or natural disaster.
